Employers looking for extra help this holiday season

(Toledo News Now) -

Employersin the area say they've had the holiday shopping season on their brain sincesummer, and now they're looking for extra help for the holidays.

Theholiday merchandise is already out at Fiddle Stix in Levis Commons, and theowner says she started preparing even earlier this year.

"Weactually already did our holiday hiring in September," said Jenelle Calverley.

Sevenadditional employees were hired for the season, and Calverley says business hasbeen busier earlier than expected this year.

"WithThanksgiving being a little later this year, hopefully people are going tostart shopping earlier, but yes, Black Friday is always a big crowd pleaser,"she said.

Whilethe stores prepare for big crowds, those looking for work are hitting thepavement.

"Thelast couple of days, I've been at the Franklin Park Mall, just beating theheap," said Timothy Billings, who is looking for a job.

Employeesat the Source in Toledo say now is the time to capitalize on the availablejobs.

"Holidayjobs are already good because it's a little extra income," said Michael Vehfrom the Source. "If you're out of work right now, it fills the gap on yourresume. You'll have some good temporary stuff to put in there and, in a lot ofcases, temporary jobs can turn into full-time jobs."

Employerssay you can stand out from the crowd if you follow up on your application.

"We'rehearing from a lot of employers that they will contact someone for interviews, and then they don't come," Veh said.

That'sa huge mistake that employers say could be the difference between landing thejob and never getting a call back.
