Charter One donates $10K to Toledo Northwestern Ohio Food Bank

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

To help thousands of greater Toledo residents enjoy a healthy holiday meal this season, the Charter One Foundation has donated $10,000 to the Toledo Northwestern Ohio Food Bank as part of its Carving Out Hunger program. The donation will provide 786 Thanksgiving turkeys, an estimated 5,502 meals, to local families in need.

"Charter One's Carving Out Hunger program is a tremendous way to kick off the holiday season and we are excited to once again be working with the Toledo Northwestern Ohio Food Bank," said Randy Corbin, Ohio retail director at Charter One. "We are honored to make this season more enjoyable by providing nutritious holiday meals to families who need a little extra help at this time of year."

The demand for food has continued to increase in Toledo and surrounding communities. This year, the food bank has provided food for more than 6 million meals. The holiday season is its busiest time of year, when it typically sees more people needing food. In addition, SNAP benefits (the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as food stamps) were reduced Nov. 1 by approximately $10 per person per month.

"The need for nutritious food is a continuing struggle and is especially prevalent during the holiday season," said James Caldwell, president and CEO of the Toledo Northwestern Ohio Food Bank. "One in five children goes to bed hungry. We are working to eliminate hunger in eight counties in northwest Ohio and we rely on the generosity of individuals and groups to achieve this goal. We are very grateful to Charter One to help provide over 786 turkeys to families in northwest Ohio."

Weighing nearly 5 tons, the turkeys will provide necessary meals to be distributed throughout the food bank's 300 member agencies. On Wednesday morning, dozens of Charter One volunteers loaded food into vehicles for those agencies.

Charter One's Carving Out Hunger program is part of Citizens Helping Citizens Fight Hunger, the bank's program to address hunger in its local communities. Its generous donation is part of this year's $105,000 commitment to food banks across Ohio through the Carving Out Hunger program. In the past nine years, the foundation has donated more than $900,000 for holiday food programs statewide, including the Cleveland Foodbank, Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank, Mid-Ohio Foodbank and Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley.
