A team was finalized Tuesday night to provide aid to those who have been left with nothing in the Philippines. Eleven Toledo area residents are heading to the Philippines Thursday.

Dozens of people were counting pills and packing them up, trying to get medical supplies ready for the big trip.

"Ready to treat anything and everything that comes in, whether it's minor surgical procedures to major surgical procedures," said Dr. Richard Paat, from Maumee. "Whether it's delivering babies, or it's providing counseling for acute stress situations, treating wounds, obviously, infections."

Dr. Paat is one of the 11 who will be making the trip to the northern island of Panay, one of the areas hit hardest by the typhoon.

"From our reports, the only thing that's left there is a standing church," Paat said. "All the buildings are down, nothing with a roof. We'll be the first medical team and relief team of any kind into that town."

The team is filled with those capable of doing the most good for those in need.

"We have internal medicine, pediatrics, we have general surgery, we have a dentist," Paat said. "We have two priests. We have a civil engineer."

This isn't Dr. Paat's first mission to a disaster-stricken area. He's been to Indonesia, Honduras, Haiti and even Mississippi after Hurricane Katrina. But it is Father Keith Stripe's first time providing spiritual support after a disaster like this.

"To offer them the message of Jesus Christ, hope that this suffering and this pain doesn't have the final say so," Stripe said.

The team is in desperate need of tetanus shots and multivitamins for children and adults. To donate to their mission, stop by ISOH/Impact or 6008 Chanticleer Drive in Maumee.
