West Toledo residents oppose store expansion

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A busy Toledo intersection is getting even more traffic as city council has given the go-ahead for a Stop & Go to expand at the corner of North Byrne and Dorr streets.

The store is only a couple blocks from a neighborhood, and many residents in the area don't want gas pumps to be added to the lot.

Right now, the store is just a carryout, but council voted 7-5 to allow the store to add six gas pumps to the property, igniting controversy in the neighborhood.

"If you leave them open late, then there is crime," said Janet Beam. "And the police would be the first to tell you that. You know, if they're open late, you're going to have a problem."

"Everybody is a target because you're tired, you're pumping gas, and these idiots come around and they'll smack you upside the head and take your car, your wallet," added Dee Bondy.

The store is in Councilman Tyrone Riley's district. He says he is also worried about an increase in crime.

"The residents in the area overwhelmingly and repeatedly voiced their opposition to the legislation," Riley said. "For my colleagues on council to ignore their request, I am disappointed."

People living near the intersection say there are already a lot of pedestrians crossing there, and now they expect that to increase. They also say it is already so congested with cars that adding gas pumps will make it incredibly hard to get around.

But Councilman Rob Ludeman disagrees. He says he took the extra time to study the plan and go to the site.

"I don't see with the configuration what increase in crime would take place there," Ludeman said. "I do think the owner is a good business person. He has made a lot of dedication to the city."

The store owner has agreed to a long list of requirements, including sidewalk curb upgrades, possible water line improvements, free air for customers to put in their tires, and closing by 1 a.m.
