PERKINS TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) - The Sandusky Post is currently investigating three separate commercial vehicle crashes on state Route 2 near Old Railroad Road in Perkins Township. Two of the crashes involved injured drivers with one being flown by Life Flight to a Toledo hospital.
At approximately 12:15 a.m. Tuesday, the first of the three crashes occurred. An eastbound commercial motor vehicle slid off the north side of the roadway and traveled through the median before vaulting off an embankment and coming to rest in a small stream. The driver was extracted from the vehicle by Perkins Township Fire and EMS. He was then flown from the scene of the crash by Life Flight.
A short time after Life Flight left, a second eastbound commercial vehicle was observed sliding off the north side of the roadway. This vehicle crossed the median and struck a guard rail preventing it from crossing into the westbound lanes. The vehicle came to rest in the median of SR 2, roughly 200 yards from the scene of the first crash. The driver was not injured from this crash.
As first responders made contact with the driver of this second vehicle, a third commercial vehicle crashed. This vehicle lost control, slid off the south side of SR 2, struck a guard rail, slid down an embankment, and jack-knifed before coming to rest. The driver suffered incapacitating injuries and was transported to a Sandusky hospital for treatment.
The accidents were weather-related. Dispatchers say the roads were very icy in that area.
The eastbound lanes of SR 2 were shut down from SR 101 to SR 4 for a few hours. They reopened shortly before 11:30 a.m.
