Wood Co. crews prepping roads for winter weather

WOOD COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

With winter weather comes slippery roads, and that's why crews in Wood County were out salting overpasses Monday as they prepared for the cold.

"The overpasses always freeze up first because there's free-flowing air underneath them and not ground warmth to keep the roads warm," said Richard Greulich from the Wood County Engineer's Office.

Crews were out treating the roads on Monday. Instead of using brine, they simply salted the overpasses because of the early rainfall.

"When it's already wet like you have today, you're putting wet on wet [if you use brine], and it's going to dissipate too fast," Greulich said. "So what we're doing is putting rock salt on the road – as the cars roll over, it'll crush it into the asphalt and stay there longer."

Greulich says going through the motions of prepping roads on a lighter snow event is helpful for crews.

"Start getting familiar with the controls again, and familiar with the truck and the salting again," he said. "[It's] something you do every year, but when you don't do it for a whole nine months you got to get back in here and get started again."

As the winter weather hits, Greulich reminds all drivers to play it safe.

"Start slowing down earlier, make sure you've got enough distance between you and the vehicle in front of you," he said.
