Toledo's next mayor is among those who spent Monday honoring veterans for their service.

Mayor-elect Mike Collins says his time serving in the U.S. Marine Corps helped him to form his core values, and he believes it's important for people to remember those who served their country.

Collins served in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, but he did not serve in Vietnam. He says on Veterans Day, he can't help but think of those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving.

He says he gives Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur a great deal of credit for helping to establish the new veterans' clinic, located on the UTMC health campus. And while he says that's a critical local facility, he plans to push for more services to be offered at that clinic, even if it means trying to attract more federal funds.

"One of the things I'd like to see us have at that clinic is a greater presence for oncology," Collins said. "There is no presence there now and I think that's important."

Collins says when he takes office, he also wants to do what he can to raise awareness about the issue of homeless veterans.
