Fallen local Marine honored with new American Legion Post

A new American Legion Post has been founded in Evansville and named after a local Marine who was killed in action during the Iraq War.

Marine Sergeant Brock Babb was killed in the line of duty in 2006. His family says he was actively involved with his alma mater, Reitz High School, and spent a lot of time trying to help young people.

That's why American Legion members named their newest post the "Brock Babb American Legion Post."

"We were floored when we walked in the door and saw all these people here," said Terry Babb, Brock's father.

It was a packed house on Friday night at the University of Southern Indiana as American Legion veterans came together to officially start the Post 324.

"It's just wonderful to start a new post and see the Legion growing again. It's magnificent," said Edward Trice, the Department Commander for the State of Indiana.

Legion members say it's been a long time since they've added a post in Evansville. They say this one is special because it's in honor of Brock.

"His family and friends are very humbled by it and they were very proud," 8th District Commander Ron Byrley said.

Family and friends remember Brock as not only a devoted Marine, but a mentor in the community and someone who has been honored locally several times before.

"He was a dedicated father, dedicated husband, son and was also dedicated to the youth in the City of Evansville," Terry said.

That's one of the reasons this new post is centered around younger veterans.

"These guys serve their country and it's another way for them to continue to serve. They have that drive to do that," Byrley said.

They'll meet at USI, but will also recruit at UE and Ivy Tech.

"This is going to give them a group of people that's been through the same experience to come together and talk to each other," Trice said.

Brock's family says knowing this post is named after him is an honor.

"We know that his name will never be forgotten. His name will live on forever," Terry said.

Legion members tell 14 News that the post is number 324 because Brock was in the Third Battalion, 24th Marines.

Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke also announced at the ceremony on Friday night that November 8th, 2013 is "Brock Babb American Legion Post 324 Day" in Evansville.
