Property of popular valley spot Greasewood Flat to be auctioned off

A popular spot in the north Valley could be closing its doors. Greasewood Flat is buried under a mountain of debt and the owner is trying to figure out other options to keep the music playing and the spirits flowing.

The city of Scottsdale confirmed on Friday that the City Council is allowing the city to look into buying a piece of land in northeast Scottsdale. The move would add to the McDowell Sonoran Preserve and possibly aid in the preservation of Greasewood Flat, a popular Scottsdale destination.

Greasewood Flat has been located at Pima and Alma School in North Scottsdale since 1975. But since the original owner passed away a few years ago, the family has been struggling with how to pay off $3 million in back taxes.

"It's walking into the past," said customer Norman Hope, who came here all the way from Canada.

Owner Hoyt Johnson III has incredible pride in his father-in-law's legacy.

"It's kind of a time warp, where you come in and you sit down and everything sort of slows down and everything eases up," Johnson said.

He's facing the prospect of closing down because the 40 acres on which Greasewood Flat and their personal homes sit will likely be auctioned off to the highest bidder to satisfy those due fees and back taxes.

"My family's income, me and all three of my kids work here, our jobs, the family's home would all go away," Johnson said.

Johnson said he's tried offering up other land nearby to call it even, but he said the trustee wouldn't consider that so he was hoping the buyer will work with them.

"You're going to drive over me with a bulldozer up at the road before you're going to take this place and shut it down on me," Johnson said.

He said there is a hearing on Nov. 20 in which a judge will take bids for the property, but he said it will still be some time before any sale is finalized.
