TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Two weeks ago, 1.8 million Ohioans saw food stamp benefits drop. Food banks are affected, as well, especially organizations like Feed Lucas County Children.

The organization feeds 2,300 kids on a daily basis. Food drops are made at 83 sites, such as schools, churches and community centers.

"Our mission is to make sure these children 18 and under get something good to eat. But over the last couple years, we're starting to see more parents coming in," said Tony Siebeneck with Feed Lucas County Children.

Siebeneck expects to see the demand increase.

The 2009 Economic Stimulus Bill temporarily boosted the federal food stamp program for its 48 million nationwide recipients. The increased benefits expired, resulting in automatic 5.5 percent cuts to monthly distributions. For a family of four, it's a cut of $36 each month.

"The source of getting some of the other food could be an issue, especially since we deal with so much fresh fruit and vegetables," explained Siebeneck.

According to Siebeneck, 33,000 kids live at or below the poverty level in Lucas County. It's a number Siebeneck says is going in the wrong direction.

"They don't have any say-so in life what happens to them. You and I do," said Siebeneck.
