UT partnering with MI community college

(Toledo News Now) -

The University of Toledo is partnering with a community college in Michigan to make higher education more accessible to others and get the university's name out there.

Students could get a UT degree without ever setting foot on their campus.

"Affordability, accessibility, hopefully will result in more college degrees for these folks," said Larry Burns, vice president of external affairs.

UT has partnered with Schoolcraft College in Livonia. After students finish their two-year degrees with Schoolcraft, they can apply to UT. If accepted, they will be a UT student, but can continue taking classes on Schoolcraft's campus.

Students can also receive scholarships, allowing them to pay in-state tuition.

"The big difference here is the location of having our classroom there, eventually having faculty there, and so that the students don't have to come to UT," Burns said.

Burns says the new partnership makes education more accessible, more affordable, and it will help UT become a nationally-known university.

"This is another major step to broaden the brand, to erase the state border line, if you will," he said.

Degrees in business, nursing, engineering and criminal justice will be available at Schoolcraft's main campus in the fall of 2014.
