Tiffin Schools apply for grant for safe routes to school

TIFFIN, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Tiffin Local Schools district is working toward making it safe for their students to walk to school without costing taxpayers any money.

On Wednesday, school officials finalized their data to apply for a Safe Route to Schools grant, which could bring $500,000 worth of improvements to the area.

Tiffin was one of only 11 districts in the state to receive funding for a travel plan study, which finished Wednesday. The information from the study will help the schools apply for the grant.

The grant money would pay for improved sidewalk conditions, street markings to be repainted, and safety programs, among other things.

But the improvements wouldn't just benefit students.

"Senior citizens in town and people that walk around and use the sidewalks and crossings," said John Davoli, director of NCOR COG. "It's not only great for the children, and that's first and foremost is safety for the welfare of the kids walking or biking to and from school, but also all the other folks that could use this."

The application for the grant is due March 1. If Tiffin is chosen as a recipient, construction could be done by next school year.
