Residents: 'Kids stuck in the middle' of changing school districts

(WMC-TV) - Changing school attendance zones has one Cordova community concerned again.

South Cordova residents were annexed against their will, and then did not have a say when Memphis City Schools surrendered its charter.

After a Shelby County School District Board of Education meeting, their kids may no longer be allowed to attend schools in Germantown.

Todd Payne organized a meeting Tuesday night for South Cordova parents concerned about possible changes to where their kids go to school.

"We've kind of been joined with Germantown for many years now, and it would be disappoint so many families to have them move," said Payne.

Joanna Young's second and third graders currently go to Riverdale Elementary School, but it will eventually become part of the Germantown municipal district.

Shelby County Schools have identified Mt. Pisgah, which could be converted to a K-8 school, as a possible alternative.

"I mean, that's so far from where we live. We would have to pass Cordova Elementary to get there, Macon Hall to get there," said Young. "It almost seems Mt. Pisgah is going to be the dumping place because they don't have anywhere to put everyone."

School board member Billy Orgel told parents a long-term solution for future generations is a goal. Meanwhile, working with Germantown leaders on a short-term plan may be the best next step.

"I think that Mt. Pisgah is not a good option," he said.

Parents hope Orgel and others do more than just listen.
