Township trying to expand Spring Meadows district

Springfield Township officials say they have big plans for the Spring Meadows shopping district, which will mean new jobs and new places to shop.

Officials are planning to attract new businesses to fill the few vacancies they have left at Spring Meadows. They say the shopping center is almost always busy.

"It's the bread and butter. It's our main commercial area," said Jacob Barnes, zoning inspector for the township.

Now they're modifying the township's zoning code, which will make it easier for developers to bring business to the area.

But officials aren't looking for standard, big-box designs.

"[We want] unique-looking buildings, unique landscaping. We want the whole area to look unique, to look desirable," Barnes said.

The hope is the unique look will bring more people to the area, too. They say loft apartments could be a possibility, but new stores will also mean more traffic. That's one thing some shoppers don't want to compromise on.

"I'm always excited for new development," said Autum Hetzel. "But when you add something or take away something else, it always comes at a cost of something else."

Officials say they're planning to require new businesses to install bike racks and sidewalks, all in an effort to make the area more walkable.

A public meeting was held Monday night to discuss the issue further.
