Leaf collection begins for Toledo

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The City of Toledo has started its annual leaf collection program.

About 120 workers with Toledo Streets, Bridges and Harbor will be working the next six weeks to collect an estimated 90,000 cubic yards of leaf material. Commissioner David Pratt is asking people to keep tree limbs and branches out of the leaf piles, because that can damage the vacuum equipment crews use, equipment paid for by property owners who pay the street cleaning service charges assessed by the city.

"Rose bushes, limbs from trees, any hard material like that we cannot pick up and we will pass over those piles if they're not clean enough for us," Pratt said.

He also says keeping piles to only three feet wide will also help speed up the process for crews, who will be working hard to complete the job before focusing on snow and ice control duty this winter.

"Depending on when the first snow comes, the same crews that are picking up your leaves are the same ones that do your snow and ice control," the commissioner said. "That's what we're dealing with and that's what we have to juggle."

The city is starting in the 43613 zip code area, and Pratt says the city will have to make a second pass in many parts of town, due to the weather.

"Weather this year hasn't cooperated," he said. "We need 25 [degrees] or below at least two days to get a good leaf drop."
