Supporters rally, encourage 'yes' vote on TPS levy

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Supporters of the Toledo Public Schools levy on Tuesday's ballot gathered at Scott High School on Monday to encourage voters to approve the measure.

Issue 24 is a 6.5 mill renewal of funding for the district. Community leaders, including superintendent Dr. Romulus Durant and Mayor Mike Bell, stressed that the levy is not a new tax.

The district currently has an average class size of about 26 students. Leaders say that number will have to increase if voters do not approve the levy.

Voters rejected a TPS levy last year, but leaders say they are feeling positive about the renewal's chances of passing.

"We have the power within our faith based, our business community as well as our local government to come together and band together for education to have an impact on our students," said Superintendent Dr. Romulus Durant.

"Without TPS I wouldn't have been able to go to college, because I wouldn't have the education that I needed," said Mayor Bell.

Polls are open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Tune in to WTOL 11 News at 5, 6 and 11, as well as FOX Toledo News at 6:30 and 10 for the latest results.
