Elderly couple dead after east Toledo fire

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Tragedy Saturday afternoon in East Toledo.

An elderly, married couple died in a house fire.

It happened in the 400 block of Fassett near Oak Street.

The Toledo Fire Department says flames broke out on the first floor of the two story house.

The victims are identified as Joe and Helen Rogowski, longtime residents of the East Toledo neighborhood.

Crews arrived on the scene and spotted heavy smoke pouring from the building.

It didn't take them long to get there.

The fire station and Rogowski house are on the same block.

The couple was pronounced dead at the scene.

There were no smoke detectors in the house.

"The fact that you have heavy fire conditions makes you move a little more cautiously as you enter a structure like this so it doesn't come from behind you or cause other issues," said Lt. Matthew Hertzfeld of the Toledo Fire Department.

Neighbors are stunned by the deaths.

"I think it's absolutely terrible. They were awesome people. Never bothered anybody. They didn't hurt nobody," said Diana Gladieux.

And everybody knew the Rogowskis.

"They were always there to talk to you. Not like these other neighbors. They were really nice people. He would always come out and talk to you when you were outside," said Ruth Cagrnski.

But the Rogowskis were also victims of crime.

Neighbors say their house was a frequent target for burglars.

"It's really bad. Why did it happen to them? Why not somebody that goes around stealing from them or something else?," said Ms. Cagrnski.

The Lucas County Coroner will rule on a cause of death.

Fire investigators will determine what touched off the killer blaze.
