Spencer Twp divided on opting out of TARTA

SPENCER TOWNSHIP (TOLEDO NEWS NOW) -

Another local community is being given the option to stay in or opt out of TARTA services. On Tuesday, voters in Spencer Township will make the call.

There are no grocery stores or doctor's offices in the township, and residents who rely on public transportation say they don't know what they'd do without TARTA. Issue 14 has the town divided.

"Doctor's appointments, grocery store – we have so much that we do," said Jessica Ellett. "Just to even get downtown, just simple things, and if we didn't have the bus, it would be devastating, really."

Others in town support Issue 14.

"I feel that TARTA has taken advantage of Spencer Township long enough, and the taxpayers here," said Curtis Lancaster.

In 2012, the township voted against opting out of TARTA, but the issue made it to the ballot again this year with a petition.

Those against Issue 14 say without TARTA, it would be almost impossible for the people who rely on it to even get their groceries if they can't afford a cab.

"In order to go from here, the center, to Meijer, it is no more and no less than about $28-32 (in a cab), just for one ride, one trip to the grocery store and back," said Penny Levine.

But Lancaster says there are affordable alternatives to TARTA.

"I know there are at least five other transportation companies with the city of Toledo that would probably be more than glad to come out and have a contract with this township," he said.

There will be a rally on Saturday in opposition of Issue 14. It will begin at 11 a.m. at 330 Oak Terrace Boulevard in Holland.
