All-digital library may be coming to Springfield

City officials in Springfield were discussing the possibility of an all-digital, bookless library Friday. Communities in Texas and Tennessee were already experimenting with the idea. If the plan goes through, Springfield would be the first community in Massachusetts to have the digital library.

City Councilor, Kateri Walsh said she was looking at the former Liberty St. library which is being renovated and turned into a senior center. The plan included about five stations to be installed while renovations were still underway.

Walsh, also the chairwoman of the Maintenance and Development Committee said the city would be looking for grants and other funding for the project.

Library director Molly Fogarty said the Springfield library system already has electronic media available for customers. Currently it only accounts for one percent of circulation, but that number was expected to rise. The library was looking into the possibility of allowing e-readers to be checked out by patrons.

City officials were planning a meeting for the public to discuss ideas.
