Candidate forum held for Perrysburg races

PERRYSBURG, OH (Toledo News Now) -

With elections just a week away, candidates are still working hard to get their message to voters. A forum was held in Perrysburg on Tuesday for candidates to do just that.

It was part debate, part get-to-know session. The focus was on candidates for Perrysburg municipal judge and the Perrysburg school board.

School board hopefuls include incumbents Gretchen Downs, Valerie Hovland and Mark Schoenlein, as well as challengers Jason Decker, Cal Smith, Sue Larimer and Lara Martin Lengel. There are only three seats available on the board.

The forum was hosted by the Northwest Ohio Conservative Coalition. The coalition says it is not speaking on behalf of a political party, but is looking for candidates who will live by sound financial principles while running the schools.

"I think there are some positions where party isn't important," Linda Bowyer, from the coalition, said of the non-partisan races. "I think it's important to have the best people, especially for something as important as a school board. You want really good people who, from our perspective, understand the taxpayers and what they are facing."

The coalition says it will endorse candidates for the upcoming races as soon as all of its candidate forums are completed.
