Highlands business catches fire one week before scheduled opening

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A busy part of Bardstown Road in the Highlands was shut down Monday night as crews worked to put out a business fire.

Just before 11 p.m. a fire was reported at a home on Bardstown Road near Grinstead Road. The home has a banner on the front saying "Coming Soon: Ugly Hookah." Fire crews said the owner told them the business was supposed to open next week.

Firefighters are not sure how the fire started. They said most of the fire was in the basement of the building and was stopped before it spread too far up into the house.

"The owner/occupant came home and evidently went to go in the back door and found heavy smoke on the interior," said Lieutenant Colonel Glen Nally. "He backed out and called 911 at that time."

It is unclear whether the business will delay opening or stick with the schedule.

No injuries were reported.
