TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

I spent some time last week with Dr. Romules Durant, the interim superintendent for Toledo Public Schools.

Dr. Durant is passionate, direct and engaged.  Refreshingly, he does not do the superintendent shuffle and hide behind bureaucratic walls.  He is an open and charismatic leader who acknowledges the failures of the past and accepts the challenges of the present.

Primary of those challenges is the TPS levy, which is on next week's ballot.  Passing a levy has been a tough sell, but Dr. Durant deserves the chance to make his vision work.  To do so, he needs the funds the levy will generate.

Voters have to overcome the skepticism and frustration and believe this time, with this man in charge, it will be different.  He does not promise overnight results.  He also says he is prepared to deal with entrenched unions, absent or removed parents, systemic failures, and struggling students.

He does not claim to have all the answers.  He does promise to be the person standing in front when the questions are asked.  That alone is reason enough to vote yes.  Yes for the city.  Yes for the region.  Yes for the kids. And Yes for man who finally says, "the buck stops here."
