Cleanup begins after Hadley fire destroys strip mall

Smoldering charred remains are all that's left of a Hadley strip mall after a fire broke out last night around 7:40 p.m. on Russell Street.

Flames could be seen shooting into the night sky as the fire quickly took over each business.

A state Firefighter Task Force, made up of 10 departments throughout central and Western Mass, helped the Hadley Fire Department control the blaze.

Assistant Chief Lindsay Stromgren of the Amherst Fire Department is the incident commander.

"Crews here had some heavy fire on the back of the building. It got up into the roof way and traveled throughout the whole building," said Stromgren.

About 60 firefighters battled intense flames throughout the night.

"They were here fighting a very aggressive fire until the very early morning hours," continued Stromgren.

Once it was all contained, members of the Red Cross were there to support the firefighters as the cleaning up process began.

"We make sure we can help keep them hydrated and well fed. They're putting in long hours fighting fires - we just want to be here to help," said Evelyn Sullivan, incident supervisor for The Red Cross.

Nancy Chan owned the Wing Wong Chinese Restaurant that once stood in the plaza located along Route 9.

She said she couldn't believe the business she invested in for more than 7 years was gone over night.

"The fire was so fast, you know. And you see the smoke coming then the fire and they broke down the window and all the smoke came out," said Chan.

And although Nancy's restaurant is no longer standing, she said it's the support from her customers and the community that is helping her get through this difficult time.

"I just want to thank all the customers from Wing Wong and everybody," explained Chan.

For residents like Mark Zuchowski, they said the businesses are a loss to the community.

"There's a lot of nice people who owned businesses here and this is devastating for them and the towns folks," said Zuchowski.

There is no word yet on what caused the fire. The Massachusetts Fire Marshal is investigating.
