LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The Kentucky Farm Bureau says retail food prices jumped 5.7% in the third quarter.

In a survey, the cost of 40 basic grocery items were added up.  Those items came out to $119.00. That is the highest total price since the Farm Bureau started counting four decades ago.  The study says consumers are paying more for fruits and vegetables especially, about ten percent more.

According to the Farm Bureau, back in June you could get a bag of Idaho potatoes for $3.59. By September, that price jumped to $5.36 for a 10-pound bag.  If you bought some bacon in June, it may have cost $3.72 a pound, by September that price had jumped 75 cents.

Shoppers and retailers say those pennies are adding up and they are starting to feel the pinch. Shopper Sandy Coy said the prices are "outrageous."  Store owner Issa Ikhlayel opened his business in the third quarter. He said the rice in price puts him in a hard spot.

"We're stuck between the high price and the price that we buy and the customers complain about the new prices," he said.  With the price of food on the rise, retailers say it is harder for them to keep prices low.

One solution is passing the bill on to the customer.  Shopper Samantha Delaney said to cope she has started to budget and buy generic brands.

"I make a list and buy only the essentials and not the name brand stuff  but the inexpensive stuff," said Delaney.  According to the Farm Bureau survey, the price of milk was unchanged.
