Lake Erie Academy visited by former resident from Pentagon

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Fourth graders at Lake Erie Academy in west Toledo welcomed a special visitor Friday.

Joe Bowser says a lot of things have happened within the walls of Lake Erie Academy, and a lot has changed. The building used to be an orphanage, where he grew up, and Bowser says the place put something in his heart that made him want to give back and help share its history.

Bowser drove seven hours from the Pentagon to surprise the fourth-grade class with pizza and a tour of where he used to live. He says he spent five years there when it was St. Anthony's Villa before he was adopted.

A trip home last summer led to Bowser developing an ongoing correspondence with Ms. McLendon's class.

"The kids are our future, so, you know, them having a positive role model is a lot to do with that," Bowser said. "I know when I was…living here, just having visitors coming by kind of gave you the boost to help you through to the next day. I just wanted to be a part of their life."

The kids and Bowser have a long friendship ahead of them. They are working on a documentary together about what the school used to be.
