Cellphones are one of the latest tools being used by Toledo Police in the fightagainst crime.

Thedepartment is showing off their new mobile capabilities in a new video theyposted online. They can now monitor their crime cameras on their phones. Theysay it's all part of their effort to watch for crime in real time.

"Wehave the capability of monitoring those remotely outside of the safetybuilding, so we could monitor them from the police car, officers can monitorthem from their phone," explained Capt. Mike Troendle. "I can control from myphone and pan, tilt, zoom the cameras and see what I need to see."

Phones, tablets and laptops are all being used by TPD officers to keep an eye on thestreets of Toledo. Troendle says gang units, drug units and the SWAT team willespecially benefit from this technology.

"Itimproves our ability to catch criminals," he said. "It improves our ability topatrol in the neighborhoods without actually having an officer present."

Thecameras will still be monitored in the crime center; the mobile technology justexpands their capabilities.

"Eventuallywe'll bring our whole server online and we'll be able to monitor all of ourcameras remotely," the captain said.
