Toledo woman heads across country for deadly disease

Robin Mower Robin Mower

A Toledo woman with ALS is raising awareness for her disease.

Robin Mower was diagnosed with ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, in 2010. Also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, ALS affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control muscle movement.

This weekend, Robin and her husband John will head out on their second annual ‘Across America for ALS' tour. It's a journey they say they were meant to go on.

They'll make stops to meet other ALS patients, and raise awareness along the way.

"When we did this before, we had people stop when we were at gas stations and ask us about [the writing on the RV]," John said. "That's exactly why we are doing this."

They do it to educate the public on a disease with no cure. ALS comes with a death sentence, but Robin continues living by doing anything she can to raise awareness – anything like sky diving and running marathons.

"We need a cure," she said. "And until we find a cure, I will fight."

The Mowers are expecting to travel for an entire month. To donate to the cause and help them on their journey, visit their funding website. You can also follow along with their travels on Facebook.
