Maumee council, school board candidates attend forum

MAUMEE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Candidates running for Maumee city council and school board gathered for a forum Thursday night to answer questions from voters.

The candidates answered questions about finances, and how to mend the relationship between the school board and the teachers.

"I think that, as a parent, we need to be involved, we need to have a voice, which we don't have right now," said Gina Hughes, who is running for school board.

Hughes has a child in Maumee Schools and says the current board members don't have children in the system. She says it's time for some parent perspective on the board.

Hughes also says working for the Lucas County Treasurer for the past 26 years will come in handy.

"Working there, I have a huge amount of experience dealing with the tax issue that we have here with property values," she said.

There are two incumbents and three challengers running for just three seats on the board.

City council candidates answered questions, as well. Some say the years they have spent on council proves their dedication to the city.

"My long-term commitment to the community, my business is here in the community, the fact that I'm willing to listen, I'm very flexible, and I think that allows me to relate to people much better than some of my other opponents," said Brent Buehrer, running for city council.

There are eight candidates running for city council, and only four open seats.
