HENRY COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A local Humane Society is asking for help to keep their doors open.

Major cuts have already been made at the Henry County Humane Society, and leaders say they're in desperate need of donations.

"We are just really struggling to make ends meet," said Diana Riefers, operations manager for the shelter.

Donations are down, so leaders have been doing everything they can to operate on a smaller budget. In August, a major cost-cutting measure was taken when they decided to only accept cats from the public, and refer all dogs to the county dog warden. But that's not the only cut they've made.

"We've reduced the hours that we're open to the public, staff hours, and by not having the dogs, we've also cut back on our utilities," Riefers said.

All of these changes might still not be enough, and Riefers says they may have to make even more drastic cuts.

Since the Humane Society does not receive tax dollars and relies solely on donations, they're asking for help from the community.

"I would hate to think what would happen to the animals if we weren't here," Riefers said.

She says they need cat food, cat litter, and monetary donations.

Donations can be made their website or mailed to:
