Maumee elementary school receives award in reading and math

MAUMEE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Ohio Department of Education recently recognized 37 schools for sustaining high academic achievement, including Fairfield Elementary in Maumee.

The award is called the Schools Promise, and recognizes schools attaining solid student achievement in reading and math, while serving a significant number of economically-disadvantaged students.

"I was very excited. It was such good news for the staff," said principal Michele Eble. "I think this really shows that what we are doing, and the programs that we have in place, are all working for our students."

Third grade reading and math scores over a five-year span was also a determining factor when it came to winning the award.

"That's our concentration. We are always looking for ways to enhance reading instructions. You know, to bring in the other core areas, you know, science and social studies," said teacher Allison Swartzmiller.

"We use everyday math. That's our math program. They really dig into the program and check if it's weak," explained Eble.

Eble has been principal for two years, but says she cannot take all the credit for this great honor, crediting her predecessor, Joe Taylor.

"When I was the principal here, the award didn't exist. But, it doesn't surprise me, knowing how hardworking the staff is, and how supportive the community is, and we just have great kids," said Taylor.

School officials say they plan to keep the standards high.

"We're looking into IT Time. We're always analyzing data and we look closely at things, and if something's not working, we fix it," said Eble.
