MAUMEE, OH (Toledo News Now) - A brand new Kroger in Maumee will open its doors for the first time to customers at 8 a.m. Friday.

The 90,921 square-foot store has been under construction since December 2012. Located at the intersection of Reynolds Road and Dussel Drive, this is the first Kroger store within the city of Maumee.

The new supermarket will mark a $20 million company investment in the Toledo area. Customers will find several exciting features, including Starbucks, an extensive produce department, a hot food service bistro and a fresh sushi bar.

"The growing population in this northwest Ohio community makes Maumee the ideal location for a customer-oriented supermarket like Kroger," said Bruce Macaulay, president of Kroger's Columbus Division. "We designed this store to meet the needs of today's shopper, with convenience, quality products and energy efficiency in mind."

The store is designed to earn an Energy Star certification, with LED track lighting, skylights and a sophisticated heat reclamation system.

In addition, the new Maumee Kroger will include a wine tasting bar, cheese and olive shop, extensive health and beauty care department, greater selection of baby items and Kitchen Place, which carries small kitchen appliances and basic kitchen needs. The store also offers a convenient drive-thru pharmacy and onsite fuel center.

This new store will replace the current store at 5109 Glendale Avenue in south Toledo, which will close at 9 p.m. Thursday. All associates at the Glendale location were given the opportunity to transfer to the new store or other nearby locations. The Maumee Kroger store created 85 new jobs for the community.

Customers are invited to celebrate the store's grand opening throughout the day Friday, with opportunities to win prizes beginning at 8 a.m., commemorative cake pops at 11 a.m. and family entertainment from 4 to 6 p.m.

The new Maumee Kroger will host a children's Halloween event, Kids Howl-a-Palooza, on Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. The event will include balloon sculpting, face painting, caricature drawing and other fun kids activities.

To continue the celebration, Kroger will donate 10 percent of the stores' sales on Tuesday to Maumee City Schools for the advancement of student technology. Also, the first 500 customers to visit the store on this day will receive a free, reusable shopping bag.
