Volunteers needed to package food to kids in Haiti

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Million Meal Alliance, a group of local churches, schools and community organizations, is preparing to pack and ship more than 500,000 dehydrated meals to children in Haiti.

Following multiple fundraising efforts to raise $110,000 needed to cover the cost of the 22-cent meals, the group is now looking to recruit 2,500 volunteers to pack the meals. Meals packed this week will be enough to give 130 children one meal a day for an entire year.

The MobilePack event, in partnership with Feed My Starving Children, a nonprofit hunger relief organization, will take place Friday and Saturday in the gymnasiums of Toledo Christian Schools at 2303 Brookford Drive in Toledo.

"They can actually see what they are doing and the effect of that. We've been shown pictures of kids who were malnourished, and once 'Feed My Starving Children' gets involved with that village, or that community, you can see the change in the kids by picture over time," said Scott Gibson with Toledo Christian Schools.

Volunteers will be preparing meals of MannaPack Rice, a food blend scientifically designed to save the lives of severely malnourished and starving children, as well as improve the health, growth and physical well-being of children who are no longer in immediate danger of starvation. These meals will be shipped out through North Point Church in 16 days.

Volunteers age 5 and up are needed to prepare and pack the meals in two-hour shifts. No special skills are required and all necessary training is provided onsite. Individuals, families and groups interested can sign up online

After double overtime, the Toledo Walleye came out on top and beat the Indy 3-2 Thursday night for a sweep in the series. Even though the fish had a 3-0 lead in the first round playoff series, the toughest thing to do in hockey is to beat a desperate team on their home ice.  Halfway through a second overtime Kyle Bonis sets up Christian Hillbrich to score the game winning goal.  The Walleye now advances to the second round. They will play the winner of the Fort Wayne and ...
