Senator Brown pushing bill to help veterans get jobs after service

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

United States Senator from Ohio Sherrod Brown visited Toledo on Wednesday to tout the Troop Talent Act of 2013, a measure which aims to help military veterans with their transition to civilian life.

"The unemployment rate among veterans in virtually every community in the country is higher than it is among the rest of the population and people that served us should have an easier go of it than that when they return home," said Brown.

Brown says the bill would focus on skills acquired during military service and help veterans to better translate that into a civilian job. He believes the key is improved coordination between the Department of Defense and Veterans Affairs.

"I've heard too many stories of soldiers and Marines who have left the military and the day they left it was clear the military cared nothing about their future," said Brown.

In Toledo, Brown met Sean Baney, who still serves in the Navy Reserves. Despite his extensive medical training in the military, Baney had to take college courses to get his certification to become a civilian helicopter medic.

"To stay in the medical field the Navy training is very similar to civilian training, but there's no civilian certifications that are equivalent to that," said Baney.

Brown also met Donald Hill, a Navy veteran who is working towards a master's degree in health education at the University of Toledo.

"I came out and all of my skills as a corpsman applied to the front line in battle didn't necessarily transfer over to the civilian sector," said Hill.

The Troop Talent Act of 2013 is currently before the Senate Armed Services Committee.
