Union members protest 2 city council candidates

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Local workers and their unions are campaigning against two city council candidates just two weeks before the election.

Members of the unions say Larry Sykes and Adam Martinez don't have the interests of working people at heart.

"Larry Sykes has actively tried to sub out the least-paid workers here in the Toledo Public School system," said Mark Sobczak, of the Teamsters Local 20. "He's trying to sub out the food service, and again, these are the least paid in the whole system."

A rally was held in front of the TPS administration building. Larry Sykes is currently a school board member. He showed up for the TPS board meeting but declined to comment on the rally.

The unions say Martinez, currently a city council member, voted to nullify collective bargaining agreements.

"Rather than force the administration to go back and bargain hard with the unions and get the deals that they needed to get to move the city forward, they took the easy road out and they voted to nullify contracts," Sobczak said. "That's against all the principles we as working people stand for."

Martinez is endorsed by the Democratic Party and says he's surprised by the union members' stance against him.

"Not once did they ever come to me and ask me why I voted that way, so I thought we had a good relationship and I thought it was a two-way communication," Martinez said. "For them to do this without at least talking to me and hearing my side of it is a little disingenuous."
