Oregon installing Navarre sidewalks for safety

OREGON, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The City of Oregon is gearing up to install sidewalks for about a one-mile stretch along Navarre Avenue, from Coy to Lallendorf.

The current sidewalk there is a narrow dirt path that was made by pedestrians walking and riding their bikes back and forth. After many council meetings, the city has come up with a safe design for the construction of new sidewalks.

The city awarded a bid to a contractor to install sidewalks on the north side of Navarre between Coy and Lallendorf.

"Unlike the section to the west from Wheeling to Coy, these are going to be place further off the curb," explained City Engineer Andrea Beard.

The placement will accommodate the existing drainage system.

"The sidewalk will follow ADA regulations ‘proper slope,'" Beard said. "We might have some areas that will have to taper down, but will follow that proper slope."

The sidewalks will also give the heavily-traveled area a cleaner look by eliminating the dirt path.

The sidewalk slabs will be five feet wide and 15 feet away from the curb. The project will cost a total of $89,000. City officials say every penny spent will help pedestrians stay safe.

"All of that is going to help with the safety and provide a better path to the walking destinations along that section of Navarre," Beard said.

The project will begin next week. The first half of the sidewalks will be installed from Coy to Walmart and will be usable by Christmas. The entire project is expected to be complete by spring.

After double overtime, the Toledo Walleye came out on top and beat the Indy 3-2 Thursday night for a sweep in the series. Even though the fish had a 3-0 lead in the first round playoff series, the toughest thing to do in hockey is to beat a desperate team on their home ice.  Halfway through a second overtime Kyle Bonis sets up Christian Hillbrich to score the game winning goal.  The Walleye now advances to the second round. They will play the winner of the Fort Wayne and ...
