BBB Tips: Get your car ready for winter

Now that the cold weather is arriving, it is time to get cars ready for winter. Dick Eppstein from the Better Business Bureau of Northwest Ohio says the bureau receives many complaints every year about car service once the freezing and snowing begins.

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - Now that the cold weather is arriving, it is time to get cars ready for winter. Dick Eppstein from the Better Business Bureau of Northwest Ohio says the bureau receives many complaints every year about car service once the freezing and snowing begins. A properly winterized car can prevent many problems.

Eppstein suggests drivers take the following steps to prepare for winter:

  • Check your cooling system. Flush and fill with anti-freeze if necessary.
  • Check the rubber hoses and belts. Replace them if the car is more than 8 or 9 years old.
  • Batteries weaken with age. Starting in cold weather requires more power.
  • A tune-up and oil change will make your engine more efficient. This includes a new air filter.
  • Tires should be in good condition including the spare. Thin tread is dangerous.
  • Keep the gas tank more than half filled and consider adding de-icer to the gas at each fillup.
  • Check your wipers and washer fluid. Consider winter wiper blades.
