Police investigating overnight burglary and shooting in Hancock County

MCCOMB, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Hancock County Sheriff's Office is investigating a burglary and shooting that happened at a home in the 300 block of North Todd Street early Tuesday morning.

Police received a 911 call around 1:45 a.m. The homeowner told them a suspect entered his home, and he shot at the suspect. The alleged intruder then fled in an unknown direction.

An officer on the way to the scene noticed a person matching the description given by the caller. Upon further investigation, the person needed to be treated for a gunshot wound. The McComb EMS was contacted at that time. Police say the person is recovering in the hospital.

According to police, this is the second time this home has been burglarized, but it's the first time people inside took matters into their own hands to stop it.

BCI investigators were on scene taking pictures and collecting evidence.

"With a population that's 16-1700 - you don't want this to happen anywhere - but for the populous here, the citizens, it's just something that just doesn't happen everyday," said McComb Police Chief Greg Smith.

Neighbors say break-ins in the neighborhood have been happening more often. Many residents were afraid to give comments because they don't want to become the next target.

"We've had other break-ins in the community, and this house has been broken into before. So at this point in time, we don't know if it's the same connection or something different," said one McComb resident.

Police say the suspect will be charged with burglary. Investigators are working to piece together clues with the hopes of putting an end to the area's crime.
