Mack, Mackin could cause confusion in Perrysburg judicial race

PERRYSBURG, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Two candidates running for Perrysburg Municipal Court Judge have similar names, and one is concerned it may confuse voters.

Molly Mack and Tom Mackin are both running for the judge's seat, and Mackin says there is concern over the similarity of their last names.

"There is concern," Mackin said. "I hope people get past that and look at our records and our qualifications and our experience. We're working to get the word out that it's ‘Backin' Mackin' and trying to have fun with that."

But Mack doesn't believe people will confuse them.

"I don't think so," she said. "Our qualifications are different, certainly our gender is different, so I think a lot of the people I'm reaching out to and meeting at the door are well-educated. They're interested in this race."

Both believe their qualifications set them apart. Mack says working in both the public and private sector prepares her for the position.

"I started out my legal career working for a federal judge, managing the court's docket, researching and writing the court's opinions, then moving into private practice and litigation," she said. "Currently, I'm chief civil prosecutor for the Wood County Prosecutor's Office."

Mackin says his temperament, decision-making skills and familiarity with the courtroom make him the best fit. He says members of all parties realize that.

"I have Republicans [supporting me], I have Democrats, I have Libertarians, I have independent thinkers, people who are making choices and the qualifications," he said. "We're proud that we're going out and earning votes from people across the political spectrum."

After double overtime, the Toledo Walleye came out on top and beat the Indy 3-2 Thursday night for a sweep in the series. Even though the fish had a 3-0 lead in the first round playoff series, the toughest thing to do in hockey is to beat a desperate team on their home ice.  Halfway through a second overtime Kyle Bonis sets up Christian Hillbrich to score the game winning goal.  The Walleye now advances to the second round. They will play the winner of the Fort Wayne and ...
