TPS audit panel looks for ways to save

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

It's not just the students hitting the books in the Toledo school district! A special panel is getting down to business to try to save the district money.

The first meeting of the advisory panel was Monday at TPS headquarters. Eight members from the community were chosen to study the recent performance audit cover-to-cover.

The audit suggested $91 million in savings were possible for the district by closing schools, eliminating some positions and duplications in services. School Board President Bob Vasquez says some of the recommendations have already been put in place, such as reorganizing the treasurer's office, but he wants the committee to take it from there and come up with their own suggestions.

"I want them to think creatively, and I want them to think globally, because with a lot of these things, it's a multi-year plan," Vasquez said. "It's not something we are going to get done in three months or six months, even. It's going to be something that's maybe a road map for over the years."

Panel members come from different businesses and industries around Toledo, and they know what cost-saving measures worked for their companies. A parent and a student are also on the panel.
