New, high-quality cameras will be installed in every police cruiser in Sylvania Township soon.

SYLVANIA TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) - Every police car at the Sylvania Township Police Department will soon have high-quality video cameras.

Sylvania Township trustees approved the purchase. Now, the police department will see cameras in every cruiser.

Deputy Chief Ray Carroll says the new cameras will be used in many ways, as a form of protection for officers against accusations, during drunk driving arrests and car accidents.

"I can show you hundreds of videos where officers were assaulted and tragically killed sometimes, and the videos do a great deal to put the bad guy in jail," explained Carroll.

According to Carroll, two cars on the force currently have older camera versions. The new cameras will have zoom capability and are the same cameras used in the cities of Sylvania and Toledo.

"If an incident happens, they can actually back up 30 seconds. If they're sitting at a light and all of a sudden an accident happens in front of them, they can actually go backwards and show that accident. Or, what happened before a traffic stop. Or what happened before they got into an accident," said Carroll.

Carroll says the cameras are not to keep an eye on their officers, but rather, to help protect them. The cameras will begin arriving soon and every car on the force will receive one.
