Wood County Cub Scout finds rare species

Weston, OH (Toledo News Now) -

ACub Scout in Wood County says he made a rare discovery in his backyard whileworking on a science project. Now environmentalists are looking into hisdiscovery.

Nine-year-oldJob Getzinger says he made the discovery of a lifetime. He says he found a rare,possibly endangered species: a blue spotted salamander.

"Ilifted up a ton of logs, and then I lifted up this one and then I saw it rightthere," Job explained. "First I thought it was a snake."

Hecaught the salamander and took it to his mother Tracy, who says she couldn'tbelieve what he found.

"Jobcame in with the salamander and he was just so excited," she said. "He justsaid, ‘Mom, look what I found!'"

Joband his mom took pictures of the salamander and called the Ohio Department ofNatural Resources office to report what he found and release it back into thewild. They're waiting to learn if the species is actually endangered.

"I'mgonna come back here a lot more often, looking under these logs coming throughhere and I wonder what I'll find," Job said.
