Wood County Cub Scout finds rare species

Weston, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A Cub Scout in Wood County says he made a rare discovery in his backyard while working on a science project. Now environmentalists are looking into his discovery.

Nine-year-old Job Getzinger says he made the discovery of a lifetime. He says he found a rare, possibly endangered species: a blue spotted salamander.

"I lifted up a ton of logs, and then I lifted up this one and then I saw it right there," Job explained. "First I thought it was a snake."

He caught the salamander and took it to his mother Tracy, who says she couldn't believe what he found.

"Job came in with the salamander and he was just so excited," she said. "He just said, ‘Mom, look what I found!'"

Job and his mom took pictures of the salamander and called the Ohio Department of Natural Resources office to report what he found and release it back into the wild. They're waiting to learn if the species is actually endangered.

"I'm gonna come back here a lot more often, looking under these logs coming through here and I wonder what I'll find," Job said.
