EDITORIAL: Going forward with Affordable Care Act

(Toledo News Now) -

If you begin with the idea that our healthcare system needed to change, you quickly arrive at the crucial question: How?

Especially when you consider that there is no such thing as a functioning market for healthcare.  If there were, the healthcare system would have most likely evolved and become more efficient because the users would have made it be so.  But since for decades and decades most of the cost of healthcare has been paid by employers and/or government, pricing transparency and competitive pressures have not been part of the healthcare process.

Going forward, if things ever get worked out, these pressures will be felt, change will happen.  Whether we call it the Affordable Care Act or ObamaCare, or it becomes known by some other clever acronym, things will be different.  That doesn't necessarily mean better, and in spite of what you may want to believe, it never meant free.  Try to remember that.

The recent decision of ProMedica's Board of Trustees to enter into a transfer agreement with Capital Care Network, Toledo's last remaining abortion facility, just doesn't make sense.
