Two generators delivered to First Energy are the largest pieces of equipment to be unloaded at the Toledo Lucas County Port Authority docks in 10 years.

First Energy is taking delivery of the new steam generators for its Davis Besse nuclear power plant near Oak Harbor.

The generators were built in Cambridge, Ontario. They were shipped across Lake Erie from Canada to Toledo via a jumbo transport ship.

From Toledo, the generators will be placed onto rail cars and moved to Davis Besse.

"As the plant ages, the components begin to wear and deteriorate," explained Larry Rushing, a spokesperson for First Energy. "So in order to get through another 20 years of life, we have to replace those components in order to continue and support safe operations."

The new generators are massive, each measuring 74 feet long, 12 feet in diameter and weighing 470 tons. They'll replace the current generators, which were installed in 1977.

Rushing says replacement of original components is common in all nuclear reactors.

"They transfer heat from the reactor contact system, which goes through the reactor into a secondary loop system that propels the turbines," he said.

The generators will be installed during the regularly scheduled refueling outage next spring at Davis Besse.
