Sylvania calls on Humane Ohio for stray cats

SYLVANIA, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The City of Sylvania is taking steps to resolve a stray cat problem in one neighborhood.

The city has reached out to Humane Ohio to help control the stray cats wandering the Vicksburg Drive and Woodland Lane area. Last month, residents voiced concerns at a city council meeting about the number of strays.

The city hopes Humane Ohio can implement its ‘trap, neuter, return' program, where the organization gathers the felines, spays or neuters them, and returns them to the neighborhood. According to Humane Ohio's marketing director Jill Borkowski, if they remove the cats completely, other cats will move in and take over the food source.

"The only environment suitable for feral and wild cats is outdoors," Borkowski said. "They're euthanized in shelters because they are not considered adoptable, but this way, they are no longer reproducing and the free-roaming cat population in your neighborhood…is immediately stabilized."

Sylvania's public services director says about $1,500 will be used for the pilot program, which will begin in about three weeks.

Humane Ohio plans to go door-to-door in the neighborhood to talk to resident and give advice on how to keep the cats out of their yards.
