Mercy Cancer Center raising breast exam awareness

The Mercy Cancer Center went pink Wednesday to honor Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

(Toledo News Now) - The Mercy Cancer Center went pink Wednesday to honor Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Employees were encouraged to wear pink, whether it was an article of clothing or an accessory. Pink ribbons, bows and shirts filled the cancer center.

Hospital officials say the goal was to begin the conversation about the importance of mammograms.

"First of all, [women] can do a monthly breast exam, and secondly, get one yearly if you're over the age of 40," said Suzanne Screpteock, from the Mercy Cancer Center. "If there's a history of breast cancer, you would get one earlier. You get it done to make sure nothing is going on."

Women who scheduled a mammogram at a Mercy facility received a breast cancer awareness gift.
