15 hospitalized after Lenawee County school bus accident

LENAWEE COUNTY, MI (Toledo News Now) -

More than a dozen people were hospitalized after a pickup truck and school bus crashed in Lenawee County Wednesday morning, including young students.

Police responded to an accident involving an Onsted school bus at US-223 and Onsted Highway in Lenawee County. The bus was traveling westbound on US-223 when a Dodge Dakota pickup truck pulled out of a gas station and hit it. The force of the crash caused the truck to spin out of control and hit a parked car in the gas station's parking lot, according to Lenawee County Sheriff's CPL James Patterson.

"The individual was driving a red pickup truck, was pulling out of the gas station. There's two semi trucks that appeared to be blocking, and as he inched further and further into the road, he got too far into the road and the bus driver struck him without being able to stop," explained Deputy Scott Wolfe.

The bus was driven by Jennifer Sawicky-Leon,45, of Adrian, who was uninjured in the accident. She was able to pull the bus to the side of US-223.

The driver of the pickup truck, Tyler Aaron Smith, 21, of Onsted, was cut out of the wreckage and transported to an Adrian hospital. He was then flown to a Toledo hospital, where he is listed in fair condition.

In a statement sent to parents, Onsted Superintendent Mark Haag said 11 children were taken to an area hospital after the pickup truck hit school bus number 14. There were 17 elementary-aged students on the bus at the time of the crash. After nearly a dozen were taken to the hospital, the remaining students on the bus were taken to school by the transportation director.

Around 3 p.m. Wednesday, ProMedica said only one pediatric patient remained under their care in good condition and will be kept overnight for observation. The other patient - a 12-year-old who was in serious condition - has been transferred to another hospital with a neck injury. ProMedica treated 15 patients total: 11 who were transported by ambulance and four who walked in after stopping at the school.

Both lanes of US-223 have reopened to traffic.

The accident is still under investigation. Authorities are trying to determine who is responsible and are still looking to interview more witnesses. No tickets have been issued at this time.
