Sylvania Schools consider energy efficiency changes

SYLVANIA, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Sylvania school leaders say they are looking at more ways to save money and are considering an energy reduction plan.

The plan is expected to save half a million dollars per year. The conservation project would take money currently used for energy bills and reallocate it to energy-saving devices. The savings gained by those changes would eventually pay for the $5 million project.

The majority of the project includes updating the lighting throughout all school buildings.

"More energy-efficient lighting, like LED lighting," said Alan Bacho, director of facilities for the district. "Beyond that, a lot of it is HVAC and controls and then some plumbing, as well."

The board will vote on whether to move forward with the project on Oct. 28. Bacho says if approved, the project would be paid for by bonds, and that it would likely begin in January and completed within a year.
