Maumee citizens’ academy students fired up for firearms demo

MAUMEE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

This week, participants in the Maumee Police Department's Citizens' Academy class tried their hands at firearms.

Many people have never shot a firearm before, so when a handgun, rifle or shotgun are put in their hands for the first time, they get nervous and excited, according to Maumee Police Sgt. TJ Stratton.

"I see a lot of twinkling eyes," he said. "It's almost [like] I'm seeing the same thing from adults that I would see from children at Christmas time."

The purpose of the firearms demo was more than just an opportunity to show class members the variety of weapons officers use in different situations; it was also an opportunity to open some eyes.

"A lot of these folks have never shot a weapon before, and we get them over that anxiety that they just don't know about it," Stratton explained. "I think they feel a lot more comfortable about being around firearms and about firearms in general after a day like this."

This week's class also discussed fire investigations, use of force and less-lethal weapons, and the role of county coroners and school resource officers.

The next class will cover fraud, carrying concealed weapons, and the court system.
