BBB Alert: Scammers call from strange number, rack up huge phone bill

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The area code Scam is back. Con artists from Caribbean countries leave fake messages on potential victims' phones claiming an emergency. The scammers really only want victims to call back at the area code to rack up an expensive phone bill, sometimes as much as $60 to $100.

Dick Eppstein of the Better Business Bureau stopped by WTOL 11 News at Noon on Tuesday with some tips to avoid becoming a victim of the scam.

First, Eppstein says the number often use area codes 809, 284, 649 and 876, which are actually international numbers. Eppstein says 809 is Dominican Republic, 284 is the British Virgin Islands, 649 is the Turks and Caicos Islands and 876 is Jamaica.

When victims return the call, the person on the other end doesn't make much sense, but works to keep the caller on the line.

Eppstein says before returning a call from an unknown number, always confirm it is a free call and not a scam by checking to the area code.
